Unlike snakes, lizards tend to shed their skin in bits and pieces.

The areas to keep a careful eye on are the tip of the tail and the toes.

The toes are probably the main problem area, especially on young lizards.

This is a picture of a young Water Dragon that I was asked to have a look at as it had ‘something wrong with it’s foot’.

If you click on the picture to see the larger version you can clearly see what has happened. The grey area above the toes and on the knee is old skin. This has built up over numerous bad sheds and eventually cut off the blood supply to the toes (There should be five of them).

The three toes that are left are all dead and had to be amputated by a vet.

Please check your lizard’s toes after each shed.
