I have had a fascination with snakes since I was about 5 years old. This went hand-in-hand with a total love of sharks, so when the inevitable conversation of "can
I have a .............." with my parents came up when I was 14, strangely the snake won, but not without a good deal of pleading! I got my first snake, a baby corn snake called
Tilly, who unfortunately did not live long and the vet could not give me a good reason for her early demise.
After a bit of a break and a lot of snake homework, I had a very creative friend who built me a new vivarium for my birthday and it
was then that I got my new corn snake, Phoenix. She is still very much alive and well today and is now the grand middle age of 12. She has
been a really great snake to look after - we have been through snake holidays (her taking off for two weeks), snake anorexia (resulting in tube
feeding her puppy food?!) but more importantly she has introduced many sceptics to the beauty of these reptiles. Her very non-agressive nature has
allowed me to introduce her to so many friends and family who still believed in the age-old rumour that snakes "are cold and slimey"! I have actually converted
one person so much so that she now has her own vivarium and pet snake!
