This seems to be one of the anti reptile groups’ main cards.

It is known that reptiles can carry the Salmonella bacteria in their gut and on their skin.

Salmonella is a bacteria which can cause various symptoms, ranging from diarrhoea to meningitis. Therefore it is very important that people are aware of the potential risk.

I’d like to point out the use of the words ‘can’ and ‘potential’ in the last two sentances.

Reports vary on the probability of your pet carrying the Salmonella bacteria. Figures range hugely, from 50% to nearly 100%, depending on the reports you read.

Basic hygiene and common sense is all that is required to avoid picking up Salmonella from your reptile.

1) Wash your hands after handling your reptile or any of the furnishings inside the vivarium.

2) Don’t kiss your reptile!

3) Don’t let young children handle your reptile.

4) Ensure that anybody handling the reptile washes their hands afterwards.

5) Remove any excrement from the vivarium as soon as possible.

As anybody who keeps reptiles (especially snakes) will know, they aren’t particular in where they go and will quite happily wander over their own poo.

Do I really need to tell you to wash your hands? ;o)
